Paid Search
introduction

Google Ads is still one of the most direct ways to put your business in front of people at the exact moment they are looking for what you sell or provide. That has not changed, but what has changed, and quite dramatically over the past year, is how the platform actually works under the hood. If your understanding of Google Ads is even a year old, a lot of it is now out of date.

This guide is a plain-language look at what Google Ads is, how it has shifted in 2026 so far, and what businesses across the GCC need to think about to use it well.

The basics, quickly

At its core, Google Ads is an auction. You choose the kinds of searches you want to appear for, you set what you are willing to pay, and when someone searches, Google runs an instant auction to decide whose ads show and in what order. You generally pay when someone clicks, which is why it is often called pay per click, or PPC.

Google also weighs how relevant and useful your ad and your website are to the person searching, through what it calls Quality Score. A more relevant advertiser can pay less and still appear above a competitor who bids more. That single fact, that relevance is rewarded, sits behind almost everything that follows.

What changed in 2026: AI took over the controls

Google has moved decisively toward AI running the day-to-day mechanics of campaigns. The human job has changed from pulling every lever yourself to guiding a system that pulls most of them for you.

The clearest example is a feature set Google calls AI Max, which reached general availability in April 2026 and has become a central part of how search advertising works. Rather than you specifying every exact keyword, AI Max lets Google expand which searches you match, generate and rotate ad copy, and choose which page to send people to, while you keep your keyword structure and your controls. Google also confirmed at its Marketing Live event that its older Dynamic Search Ads would be upgraded into AI Max from September 2026. The direction is unmistakable. Running Google Ads well is becoming less about manual tweaking and more about steering the AI with good inputs and clear goals.

Alongside this, Google announced a new generation of ad formats built for AI-powered search, where a growing number of people now ask questions and get conversational answers rather than a list of links. In these formats, your business can appear as a relevant suggestion inside the answer itself. It is early, and much of it is still rolling out rather than fully live everywhere, but the trajectory matters. Search is becoming a conversation, and ads are being reshaped to fit that.

Just in August 2026, Google also changed how Target CPA now works. Google's Smart Bidding now optimises toward the target you've set, even when a budget cap limits how many auctions a campaign can enter. Before this update, that wasn't true. More on this in detail can be read here, and it's important to know if you're running CPA ads.

What the AI platform changes now means:

If the AI now handles bids, matching and much of the creative rotation, you might reasonably ask what is left for the advertiser to do. The answer is: the things that actually determine success.

The first is the quality of what you feed the system. AI can optimise how your ads are shown, but it cannot rescue a weak offer, a confused message or a poor website. If anything, as the mechanics get automated, the inputs matter more, not less. The clarity of your message and the strength of the page people land on become the real levers of performance.

The second is direction. The AI needs to know what a good outcome looks like. Pointed at clicks, it will get you clicks. Pointed at genuine leads or sales, with accurate conversion tracking behind it, it will chase those instead. Getting that setup right is now one of the most important things in the whole account, because the system optimises toward whatever you tell it to value. Tell it the wrong thing and it will very efficiently deliver the wrong result.

The third is judgement about where to let go and where to hold on. Handing everything to automation without proper controls is how budgets get wasted quietly. Knowing which controls to keep, which searches to exclude and when to trust the system is exactly the kind of judgement that separates a campaign that works from one that just spends.

What matters specifically in the GCC

The Google Ads platform is global, but using it well in this region takes local understanding. A few things stand out.

Language is the big one. The GCC is multi-lingual, and running ads in English alone can leave Arabic search demand untouched, which in some sectors converts at a higher rate and faces less competition. Treating Arabic as a serious part of the strategy, rather than a translated afterthought, is often where the easier gains sit.

Seasonality is sharper here than in many markets. Ramadan, Eid and major retail moments like the Dubai Shopping Festival shift both consumer behaviour and advertising competition significantly, with costs typically rising as everyone competes for the same attention at once. Planning campaigns and budgets around the calendar is not optional if you want to be visible at the moments that matter.

And competition is uneven. High-value sectors like real estate, legal, finance and healthcare are fiercely contested and expensive, while other niches remain relatively open. Where your business sits on that spectrum should shape how aggressive, and how patient, your approach needs to be.

The honest bottom line

Google Ads in 2026 is more powerful and, in some ways, easier to start with than it has ever been, because the AI handles so much of the heavy lifting. But easier to start is not the same as easier to succeed. When the mechanics are automated and available to everyone, the advantage shifts to the things the machine cannot do for you: a clear offer, a strong website, accurate tracking, sound judgement about goals and controls, and real understanding of your market.

That is also the trap. It is now very easy to switch on a campaign, let the defaults run, and spend a meaningful budget without ever knowing whether it is working. The businesses that win are not the ones who simply turn it on. They are the ones who point it in the right direction and keep an honest eye on the results.

Where Push comes in

We run Google Ads for businesses across the UAE and the wider GCC, and our job has evolved exactly as the platform has. Less manual button-pushing, more making sure the strategy, the goals, the tracking and the inputs are set up so the AI works for you rather than quietly against you. As a Google Partner, staying current with these shifts is part of the job, so you do not have to keep up with every change yourself. As AI Marketing Agency, we also pride ourselves on the workflows and technology that we use as an agency outside the platforms own capabilities. Our team can run various platform audits in seconds to identify (based on best practice and our own team expertise) the Strengths and Weaknesses of your accounts and general digital performance, as well as management being supported by the use of our inhouse technology, dial. More info about Dial here.

If you are running Google Ads and are not sure whether the recent changes are helping or hurting you, or you are thinking about starting and want to do it properly, the simplest next step is a conversation. We can look at where you stand and give you a straight answer. No jargon, no scare tactics, just a clear picture and a practical plan.

Want to make sure your Google Ads are set up to work in 2026, not just switched on? Get in touch with Push for a straightforward conversation about where you stand and what to do next.
